Emma Bigé is the main guest of issue 85 of the ADC Journal. As a philosopher and dancer, she asks what permeates our bodies in order to move them.

Founded in 1994 and published in French-speaking Switzerland, the Journal de L'ADC is the only journalistic publication on dance in Switzerland. A new format was introduced in 2019, when the Journal changed from a quarterly to a biannual publication. Its 85th issue poses the question of what makes us move and dance. In her editorial, Anne Davier, Director of the ADC Pavilion, speaks of

"these movements within us that are not of our own making and that reveal all kinds of entanglements with the world. We could learn to be joyfully receptive again: the little dance of gravity within us, but also the dance of the leaves or the stars".

When we're talking about what keeps the movement going but also what could hold it back, that's everything that comes from us. Paola Zadra's dissertation is called

THREATS TO THE PHYSICAL AND MENTAL INTEGRITY OF DANCERS. A study of pain and injuries reported by dancers and their potential link to generalized joint hypermobility (GHG) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)

as part of a Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Dance Science at the Institute of Sports Science, University of Bern.

Approximately 150 professional dancers took part in the survey at six German opera houses and/or state theaters. A significant correlation was found between musculoskeletal pain and generalized anxiety disorder in professional dancers. Regular screening could be a valuable tool to detect injuries, risk behaviors and mental disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder. Therefore, it is recommended to implement appropriate prevention programs and mental skills training for dancers to enable them to have a long and healthy career.
